Last minute christmas cape tree skirt

Time to get your tree skirt together for the holidays. It’s time to add a bit of whimsy and festivity to your tree’s base by covering it in a festive skirt.

Buy an inexpensive fabric with a holiday pattern and cut it into strips. Then use hot glue to attach the strips around the bottom of your tree. If you’re feeling ambitious, add more strips as garland (like we did on our tree). The best part? You can remove it after the holidays and use it again next year!

Use scraps from sewing projects or knit some garland by hand. Attach it to your tree using hot glue or needle and thread. You can also use ribbon or twine if you don’t want anything too bulky under your tree.

Make a paper chain garland by folding strips of paper in half lengthwise, gluing them together end-to-end, then cutting them into 2-inch lengths (the exact length will depend on how long you want your garland).

DIY tree skirt

There are many ways to create a tree skirt for your Christmas tree. The most common  uses fabric, but you can make yours with other materials such as paper or even cardboard.

1. Start by folding the fabric in half and cutting it on the fold.

2. Next, cut two pieces of ribbon to the desired length of your skirt. Our tree is 7′ tall and we cut ours to be 9′ long so we would have some extra fabric to tie around the base of the tree. You can make these any length you want, just make sure they are not too long or they will drag on the ground and get dirty.

3. Cut a piece of fabric into a triangle (it’s easier if you cut it from the bottom corner up). Tie around both pieces of ribbon with a simple overhand knot, then trim any excess fabric from around the knot so it looks nice and tidy on top of your tree skirt. Repeat for all four sides of your skirt!
